$2,000 2009 AltaLink Aboriginal Scholarship

AltaLink offers three $2,000 scholarships annually to post-secondary students belonging to Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8.

This scholarship program is designed to recognize the Aboriginal community and offer financial assistance to Aboriginal students attending post-secondary institutions.

AltaLink owns and operates the electrical transmission system in central and southern Alberta and works to deliver your power to your community.

Deadline for students to apply is November 30, 2009.

World Skills 2009

Grand Chief Charles Weaselhead to bring greetings at the Opening Ceremonies of World Skills 2009 on Tuesday, September 1 2009 at 6:00 pm in the Grand Stands at Stampede Park. The Grand Chief will welcome over 3,500 delegates and over 900 competitors from 51 countries around the world to Treaty 7 territory.

As well, Eldon Weasel Child’s band and Frank Turning Robe with Sorrel Rider will perform at the Coca Cola stage on the Stampede Grounds during World Skills on September 4 2009. Check the link to World Skills 2009 (www.worldskills2009.com) for details and to purchase tickets to the Opening Ceremonies.

World Skills is the “Olympics” of skilled trades competitions. It is free and open to the public on Wednesday, September 2 to Saturday, September 5 2009. The competitors are the best in the world in ages 17 – 22. People are urged to park and take transit to the Stampede Grounds.

Off Reserve Homeownership Program Update - August 2009

The Off Reserve Homeownership program is still accepting applications. The application is available here.

Now in the final year of the off reserve program, the Treaty 7 Management Corporation (T7MC) will be delivering the “Homeownership Program” to the off reserve members within Treaty 7.
The program allows Treaty 7 members the opportunity to receive a grant in the amount of 10% or a maximum of $ 20,000.00. The grant is none repayable should the approved applicant reside in the housing unit for a minimum of 5 years.

General Information on the Program.

The Chiefs of Treaty 7 have initiated this program to assist the Treaty 7 members obtain housing off reserve.

  • You must be a first time homebuyer
  • You must qualify for a mortgage
  • You must produce a fully executed Residential Real Estate Purchase Contract
  • The name of the solicitor for the seller;
  • Evidence of mortgage approval
  • Evidence of property insurance

A committee will be established to review and approve applications based on the criteria set out under the Province of Alberta’s “Conditional Grant Funding Agreement” and guidelines established by the “Treaty 7 Management Corporation” geared to assisting Treaty 7 members wishing to obtain a grant for homeownership.

Information sessions will be held to detail the program. Watch for times and place on website.

AFN Alberta Regional Chief Election



The election for the Regional Chief of Treaty No. 6, Treaty No. 7 and Treaty No. 8 [Alberta] has been set to coincide with the 2009 Fall Session of the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs, being hosted by the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta. The dates of the assembly are September 1-3, 2009 and will be held in Edmonton, Alberta. For more information, please contact the offices of the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta.

Nominations are now open to any candidate who is a member of the affiliated First Nations of Treaties 6, 7 and 8 (Alberta). The candidate must submit the nomination form that has the name and signature of the Nominator and Seconder for the Nomination, who must be Chiefs of any of the affiliated First Nations (No Proxies allowed on nomination form).

Nominations will be closed at 4:00 p.m. (Alberta Time) on August 24, 2009. All forms must be submitted to the attention of the Chief Electoral Officer at the address indicated above.
